Vocabulary SHORTCUTS


1st- Photoshop Pixels and Resolution- YOU NEED TO KNOW!!

image quality  dependent on Resolution & Aspect Ratio  
Resolution  amount of detail (or data) stored for an image  
PPI  pixels per inch  
Monitors  are low resolution devices, most display 72 PPI  
DPI  Dots Per Inch  
Aspect Ratio  relationship of an object’s width to its height  
pixelation  each pixel in the image must cover a larger space on the screen (blurry ~ distorted)  
Vector graphics  created from mathematical formulas used to define lines, shapes and curves.

Raster Graphics  Consist of grids of tiny dots called pixels  
Common Raster Formats  GIF//JPEG//BMP//PNG//TIFF  
Compression  how an image is saved in order to reduce the file size  
what affects image quality?
image resolution
what are the two types of graphics?
bitmap, vector
image resolution
the number of pixels per square inch; controlled through graphics pkg when asked to create image
image resolution (website ppi)
72 ppi; lower resolution, smaller file size, faster download time
image resolution (printing ppi)
300ppi or more; higher resolution means bigger file size
increasing resolution (ppi)
increases the quality of detail but file size is much larger
when low resolution is printed...
you lose detail
the more bits you use...
more colour info is stored to describe the colour of a pixel. thus quality and file size increases.
graphics software (illustration program)
drawing program; vector based programs allow more flexibility when creating artwork that is to be resized or must go through multiple edits; logos, should be created in illustration programs.

adobe illustrator, coreldraw, macromedia freehand (use vector images)
graphics software (photo/image editors)
paint programs; work with bitmap images; bitmap graphics tools are needed for working with photos, scans, or other "realistic" images. superior for final output of images for the web or for many special effects to photos.

why does using a certain type of graphic matter?
effects how graphics are displayed on a computer screen in terms of: quality, file size, and time to display graphics
what is a bitmap
made up of small squares called pixels; can't really resize the image because it will distort it; if you zoom in there's pixels
what is a vector
image represented w/ lines and arcs that have a mathematical relationship (line, rectangle, circle); doesn't matter what the size of the image is; when the image is resized there are crisp edges, no distortion, quality is maintained; file size increases; ideal for producing artwork; zoom in, no pixels
common bitmap file formats
jpg, gif, png, tiff, bmp

can you convert vector to bitmap?
no, but you can convert bitmap to vector
